July was rough.
Here's what's actually going on underneath it.
Sales confirmed fell 26% in July, year-on-year. That's the worst single month of 2026 so far - worse even than June's -21%.
But that's not the whole picture.
RPD grew 19.5% in July, the strongest yield month of the year. And conference events were up 39%. Three numbers, one month, telling three different stories - which is exactly why the headline figure alone isn't enough to go on.
Zoom out to the full year, and the picture calms down a little, but doesn't disappear: enquiries up 11%, events up 14%, RPD up 14.5% year-to-date. July's sales dip has dragged the year-to-date sales confirmed growth rate down to just 0.1%, from 4.8% through June - one more soft month and the full-year figure goes negative.
RPD growth accelerated in July, hitting +19.5% for the month - the strongest single month of the year - which pushed the year-to-date growth rate up to 14.5%, from 13.7% through June.
Venues are genuinely earning more per delegate, and that trend has been consistent across every segment we track.
Enquiries slowed too - up only 3.4% in July, against an 11.4% year-to-date average.
Worth watching whether that's a one-month blip or the first sign of cooling demand.
Splitting out the two biggest segments shows why the national blend behaves the way it does:
Meetings got weaker in July specifically. Sales confirmed's year-to-date decline deepened to -4.1% (from -0.9% through June), and events delivered growth cooled to +2.3% (from +5.0%). RPD is still climbing, up to +8.6% YTD - so meetings venues are earning more per delegate even as the segment itself softens.
Conferences are still the growth engine, but eased off slightly. Sales confirmed's YTD growth fell to +23.9% (from +31.6% through June), and events delivered growth cooled to +59.7% (from +63.0%). Still enormous numbers - just not accelerating as fast as they were at mid-year.
Last month, we flagged that conferences were taking a growing share of total event volume, and it looked like that shift was speeding up. Looking at July in isolation, that's not quite right: conferences accounted for 35.5% of combined Meetings + Conferences events in July, essentially identical to the 35.2% year-to-date average. The mix shift has levelled off this month, not accelerated. Worth knowing if you were planning around that trend continuing to steepen.
